INSTRUCTIONS
Following your analysis of the design you selected in Task 2, you will now create a new piece of work that is either a response to or an inspiration from the previous one. You will incorporate your understanding of design principles in your design. Any appropriate medium and/or resources may be used to convey your visual message. Direct use of photographs is not allowed. If any work is shown to be plagiarized, the student will receive a failing mark for the entire module and be subject to the university's regulations regarding academic misconduct.
As I was pretty lost on what to do for my design, I went to look for some inspirations on Pinterest shown above.
Then, I created some sketches on the composition of the hourglass shown below to apply the design principles I've learnt:
Feedback from Dr. Charles:
Rationale
Through the artwork shown above, I intend to evoke an emotional response from the viewers, motivating them to protect marine life. This artwork expresses the urge to save lives below water before they are poisoned by radioactive substances or plastic pollution. It encourages the viewers to take action to protect the habitat of the marine inhabitants by collecting trash and restoring their habitat as the fishes do not know what they are consuming (harmful substances). According to the targets to conserve the ocean, we should reduce marine pollution and restore the ecosystem to achieve a healthier and productive oceans by using reusable bags, reducing the amount of harmful chemicals that enter the ocean, managing oil spills and many more.Following your analysis of the design you selected in Task 2, you will now create a new piece of work that is either a response to or an inspiration from the previous one. 1. Visual references
After choosing the 14th goal set by the United Nations - Life Below Water, I decided to read more information in relation to this goal to narrow down the topic in which I hope to portray in my design.

Based on the infographic shown above, I have decided to focus on the topic of plastic pollution as I think it is happening at anytime and any ocean due to improper waste disposal. As a result, it destroys marine habitats and also causes many marine inhabitants to die. For instance, according to WWF, turtles often eat plastic bags as they think it's jellyfish and plastic debris can get lodged in coral and affect the health of reefs.

2. Sketches
As I scrolled through Pinterest, I found something that I would like to try drawing, and thus, I start to sketch out my ideas as they say: "You should always start with a sketch."
Figure 2.1: Brainstorming
Based on the last ideation from above, I started to have more ideas on mermaid (a mythical creature). To further elaborate on the last ideation, I think that we would not know we've hurt them as they live at the deepest part of the ocean. Thus, it feels sad and frustrated as there are too many plastic in the ocean and it couldn't clean the ocean as she is entangled in a fish net. Then, I started to sketch more illustrations with mermaids shown below:
3. Progression
After receiving feedbacks from Dr. Charles, I started to explore more on my fifth sketch.
Then, I created some sketches on the composition of the hourglass shown below to apply the design principles I've learnt:
(From left to right)
1) The first composition has repetition, alignment, word
2) The second composition has balance, word, movement
3) The third composition has balance, word
4) The fourth composition has emphasis, word, repetition
After receiving feedbacks, I then tried to add texture to the hourglass.
Final Design
Final design (A4 size) - The final hour
Design Principles
Emphasize - Hourglass placed in the middle (indicate time is running out for marine inhabitants)
Contrast - Water (blue) and fishes (orange) ~ peaceful underwater world
Balance (Approximate symmetry) - Tilted hourglass (create visual interest)
Harmony - Analogous colors (blue, green, purple)
Repetition - Circles in the background (illustrate toxic bubbles)
Movement/Principle of continuity - Connecting the flowing radioactive substance at the top of the hourglass to the fish surrounding it to consume the radioactive substance
Text - “Life Below Water Matters” (raise awareness on issue)
Week 7
Try to add some bright green at the blue section. It is more comprehendible compared to the one before. Increase the opacity of the words in the third exploration.

FEEDBACKS
Week 5Too many mermaids, the key word is relatable, how does mermaid, a mythical creature be relatable? The 5th idea is fine, which communicates the idea of the 14th UNSDG goal best. It could be the opposite, where the top part is the radioactive ocean, and the bottom part of the hourglass is the fishes trying to eat the radio actives. I could also enlarge the hourglass, making it fit the whole artboard.
Week 6
Try to add texture or words and change the color of the background as black may be overpowering. Refer to alphabetic soup for the trash, by lowering opacity. Besides, try to apply continuity to the ink droplet by connecting the drop into the water. Remove the words.
